THE 2008 WILLIAM ROCKHILL NELSON AWARDS

Cosponsored by: The Writers Place and The Kansas City Star

The William Rockhill Nelson Awards were instituted in 2003 to bring state and national attention to Missouri and Kansas writers and their books.  The 2008 Awards will be given to Missouri and Kansas writers for distinguished literary work in one or more of the following categories:

• A book of fiction with a 2007 calendar year publication date.

• A volume of original poetry with a 2007 calendar year publication date.

• A book of nonfiction with a 2007 calendar year publication date.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

1. Anyone may submit a book for consideration, including publishers (trade, university or small press), agents and authors.  Individuals may nominate as many titles as they wish.
    

2. All nominated authors must have resided in Missouri or Kansas since at least January 1, 2006.  In the case of more than one author of a submitted work, all must satisfy the residency requirement.  Each nominated author must sign the affidavit at the bottom of the entry form, confirming that he or she satisfies the residency requirement.
    

3. Staff, officers, and directors of The Writers Place, management of The Kansas City Star, and books published by The Kansas City Star or affiliated companies, are not eligible to receive an Award.  Individuals associated with The Writers Place and The Kansas City Star may serve on screening committees to select finalists for the Awards, but may not serve as final judges for the fiction, poetry or nonfiction Award.  Nominees for an Award may not serve on a screening committee for any category.
    

4. The original publication date of the nominated book must be during calendar year 2007.  E-books are not eligible.
    

5. In the event of a dispute as to eligibility, the William Rockhill Nelson Awards Committee will decide whether the book is eligible, and its decision will be binding.
    

6. There are no submission fees.  Send the completed entry form and three (3) copies of the nominated book to:

   Please Note:  The books will not be returned. The books and entry form must be mailed to the above P.O. Box.  Do not mail or deliver books to The Writers Place.
    

7. Submissions must be received by April 4, 2008.
    

8. Winners will be announced by September 2008.
    

9. Each winning writer will receive:

• a $500 cash prize;

• commemorative medallion to be presented at a time and place to be announced;

• publication of an excerpt from the Award-winning book in the Kansas City Star.
