Thank you for participating in our William H. Hickok Series events featuring u.s. poet laureate juan felipe herrera!

We look forward to bringing similarly engaging and exciting literary events to the Kansas City community in the future!

The Writers Place was pleased to present five free events during the spring of 2016 honoring diversity and U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.

The springtime events, aimed to introduce readers and writers alike to Herrera’s writing, his art, and his activism. In keeping with Herrera’s mission as U.S. Poet Laureate and with our own mission, we hosted storytelling events, programs for young writers, and a fascinating primer on Herrera’s work and philosophy.

For the culminating event of the series, The Writers Place, together with partners including The Kansas City Public Library, hosted Juan Felipe Herrera for a poetry reading and a craft talk May 27 and May 28 to inaugurate the William H. Hickok Series, named for our late founder.

The Writers Place is grateful for support from ArtsKC and the Missouri Arts Council. Special funding for the 2016 William H. Hickok Series event has been provided by the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts, Ramon Murguia, Latino Writers Collective, Kansas City Southern and Gloria Vando Hickok on behalf of the N.W. Dible Foundation. The Writers Place is partnering with Kansas City Public Library to host Juan Felipe Herrera for the culminating event. University of Missouri Kansas City and Jewish Vocational Services have contributed support to the event series as well.
