The approach of this workshop offers translators the opportunity to hear how their translations are perceived by readers. Each translator electronically submits two poetic works (in verse or in poetic prose) of one page or less, at least one week prior to the workshop, to Anne. (No late submissions, please!) Anne chooses ONE translated work from each translator and makes copies of these for each member of the workshop. THE NAMES/IDENTITIES OF BOTH TRANSLATORS AND ORIGINAL AUTHORS ARE WITHHELD. In the workshop, participants work together on the selected translations only as poetry in English, and respond to them as such. Works, then, are read with little historical context. Translators may only enter the conversation about their own poem minimally, and as "actors," pretending not to have translated it.
We will read and discuss ten poems over two sessions, while taking notes directly on the paper on which they are printed. In the second session, participants will have the opportunity to reveal which poem they translated and discuss its translation. Each translator will be given the annotated copies of her own poems.
For this workshop to function well, 8 to 12 people must register and submit two translated poems. Please, sign up before April 6 so we can run the course.
