ARTIST’S STATEMENT—LOWELL L. SMITHSON
Winston Churchill, a personal deity of mine, experienced “a joyride in a paint box”—me too! I paint what see, imagine, hear, taste, or feel—resulting in oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache landscapes, portraits, expressionist work and abstracts. These can be stimulated by Jazz, classical music, Gregorian Chant, the Andes, Macchu Piccu, Iguasu Falls, Galapagos, northern New Mexico, Portugal, Italy, Sicily, Maine lighthouses, Bahamas, Grand Canyon rafting, fall along the Missouri River, Mt. McKinley, polar bear at Hudson Bay, grandchildren’s smiles, greyhounds, poetry, politics, movies or just anything. Drawings include gesture and contour drawings of figures, abstracts expressionist faces, music, Feng Shui symbols with Chinese color combinations, and so on. Summing up—I heartily join Mr. Churchill in envying Methuselah—as do all of us who know we will not live long enough to paint and draw everything we want to.
Visits to my KC studio (1215 West 65th Street) are welcome, but please call first (816-926-0866). See 12 paintings in colorat www.artistsregister.com/artists/mo43 (and do a name search using “Lowell Smithson”).
