This month, The Writers Place and the Johnson County Library will present a poetry reading by inmates and former inmates incarcerated at Lansing Prison. The featured writers are Adam Rhodes, Carl Misner, Marty Robinson, Johnny Duncan, and Darryl Burton.
Arlin Buyert has led the poetry program at Lansing Prison for the past four years. It is sponsored by Arts in Prison, Inc. which also features The East Hill Singers, theatre and yoga programs for inmates.
Mr. Buyert has published three books of poetry and his most recent book, Oh Say Can You See was a Thorpe Menn Award finalist in 2015. He has also edited two anthologies of inmate poetry entitled Open to the Sky.
Thomas Zvi Wilson initiated this reading series in 2001, which The Writers Place cosponsors with the Johnson County Central Resource Library. Mr. Wilson’s objective was to broaden outreach for The Writers Place and create an additional venue for poetry and prose writers to read. After Thomas’ health failed, his wife Jeanie Wilson, an emeritus board member and poetry and short story writer, has curated this popular reading series in his memory. The readings take place at the newly remodeled Johnson County Central Resource Library from 6-8 p.m. located at 9875 W. 87th Street in Overland Park, Kansas. The readings are free and include light refreshments. Donations to The Writers Place are welcome. The contact number for questions is 913-826-4600.
