Audience: Open to all who have an interest in reading collections of poetry and/or a series of poems by one particular contemporary poet.
The purpose of the reading circle would be to kickstart a deeper study of contemporary poetry for the sake of study itself, or as a springboard for creative work either in poetry, fiction or memoir. Discussions will include an introduction to the life of the particular poet, pointing out autobiographical and experiential influences, and then move to discussing selected poems from a collection by the poet.
We’ll begin with three modern poets who have influenced current writing: Elizabeth Bishop (please read either Poems or The Complete Poems, 1927-1979). Next we’ll study W.S. Merwin’s The Shadow of Sirius, and then, Gwendolyn Brooks’ Selected Poems: 1963. Feel free to borrow from the library, share with a friend or purchase from your favorite local bookshop. A list of the poems we will discuss can be emailed to you ahead of time.
