This four-week introductory class and writing workshop focuses on the basics of creative nonfiction and the art of effectively telling true stories. We will look at works by some of the genre's greats, including Lee Gutking (the "godfather of creative nonfiction") and Joan Didion, and discuss how and why creative nonfiction is a powerful form of storytelling. We will talk about what creative nonfiction is (telling a true story in a creative way using elements of fiction such as plot, setting, and character development) and what it isn't (using creative license to the point in which a true story is no longer true). Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a work-in-progress of up to 4,000 words to the first meeting. The first two sessions will consist of instruction, reading and writing time, in which participants can either work on a draft they bring themselves or on a new story inspired by a provided writing prompt. The third and fourth class sessions will take on more of a writers' workshop feel, where participants who wish will have an opportunity to receive feedback on their work from others in the class. All participants are encouraged to come with questions relating to the genre.
