Does form in fiction restrict or reveal? Does it confine the writer, or free her to tell her story? In this two-day workshop we’ll explore the question of form in fiction and learn about the limitations and strengths of common forms from the short short story to the short (and long) story to the novella to the novel to the tome. We’ll practice writing in these forms and discuss how to choose the form most suited to telling your story, as well as dip our pens into a few metafictional techniques, such as innovative ways of playing with the relations between author-narrator-character-and reader. The goal is to open our fiction to new forms and to enhance the forms we’re already working in.
