The Writers Place presents the Thomas Zvi Wilson Reading Series at The Johnson County Library. This month's featured guest are Susan Rieke and Rich Smith.
Susan Rieke, S.C.L., Ph.D. teaches English at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., as a Professor of English. After being department chair for 16 years, she was awarded the McGilley Chair for Liberal Studies. As the Chair, she promotes the liberal arts at the University and in the Kansas City and Leavenworth area. She has published two books of poetry, Small Indulgences and From the Tower, and her poetry has appeared in magazines; another manuscript is pending. She edited and published the poetry of Mary Janet McGilley, S.C.L., Lean to the Times. She has given numerous readings of her poetry, also in the Kansas City area and Kansas.
Rich Smith is the author of All Talk and Great Poem of Desire and Other Poems. Recently, his poems have appeared in Tin House, Barrow Street, City Arts, Hobart, Verse Daily, Pinwheel, and elsewhere. He received an M.A. in Poetry from Ohio University and an M.F.A. in Poetry from the University of Washington. After a year of cobbling together a life in freelance copywriting, arts journalism, and adjunct teaching, he’s settled down (at least for the year) as the current Visiting Professor of Poetry at the University of Central Missouri. Currently, he’s working on a screwball comedy screenplay called Best Club, a book-length essay about sex, cowardice, and family called King of the Babies, and a new book of poems.
