READING: J.C. HALLMAN and WHITNEY TERRELL
Hallman is the author of a book of stories, The Hospital for Bad Poets, and two books of nonfiction, The Chess Artist, and The Devil is a Gentleman.  He will read from his third book of nonfiction, In Utopia, which explores the history of utopian thought and literature. WHITNEY TERRELL, author of The Hunstman and King of King's County, was named one of 20 "writers to watch" by members of the National Book Critics Circle. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he is the New Letters Distinguished Writer in Residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

John Mark Eberhart (Johnson County Library) leads a panel of editors in a discussion about what it takes to get published in literary journals.  Panelists include Speer Morgan, editor of The Missouri Review; Robert Stewart, editor of New Letters; and Wayne Miller, editor of Pleiades.  In addition, editors of Kansas City's other small magazines will be on hand to display issues and distribute guidelines and advice.

The second event in the Paired Voices Series. The theme is "passion."
Robin Behn is the author of six books of poems, most recently Horizon Note, Naked Writing, and The Yellow House, just released from Spuyten Duyvil Books. Recipient of grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and the NEA, she directs the MFA Program in Creative Writing at The University of Alabama and also teaches for Vermont College of Fine Arts. She lives with her son in Birmingham, Alabama, and plays whistle and flute in the traditional music band Waxwing (www.waxwingband.com), with whom she also performs her "fiddle tune poems."
